The goal of Junior Achievement Russia's new project, the "Simple Words" Essay Contest, is to encourage Middle and High School students in Russia and in the USA to reflect upon SIMPLE WORDS, such as peace, nature, love, business, partner, friend which have -- for each student -- personal meaning and motivational power, and by submitting essays, to share their values and beliefs with their peers nationally and globally.

The "SIMPLE WORDS" Essay Contest is viewed as a two-stage project. The first stage will culminuate in May, 2002 in Moscow with the anouncement and recognition of the first All-Russia Essay Contest winners. The next stage goal -- is to establish a network to encourage young people in Russia and in the USA to think and write about SIMPLE WORDS and to create and maintain a web-site for managing submissions (in a multi-lingual environment). This stage starts in the summer of 2002 and culminutes in spring, 2003 with recognition and awards to the best essays.

An important part of the project is development of a database describing core essay concepts, attitudes and opinions correlated with student descriptors (age, gender, race, nationality, etc.). Researchers will have access to core meta-data describing essay contents and will also be able to provide their own metadata descriptors which they can use for further analysis. The result will be a window on the thoughts and attitudes of young people and the relationship to variables that differentiate and unite them.
