He who receives an idea from me receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mind, receives light without darkening me. - Thomas Jefferson

If it [automation] keeps up, man will atrophy all his limbs but the push-button finger. - Frank Lloyd Wright

Perhaps our biggest obstacle with this project is the fact that a portion of our potential audience does not have direct access to the international network and cannot access our WWW server material -- either directly (via a client 'browser' like Netscape) or indirectly (by telnetting to our computer and using our 'friends' account).

We have just recently completed implementation of an email gateway so that subscribers to the FRIENDS listserver can now obtain information from the WWW server by submitting email requests.

The directions for doing this are as follows:

  • Send a message to fp@solar.ncsa.uiuc.edu with the following format:
    send http://solar.ncsa.uiuc.edu/friends/home.html
  • In return, you will receive via email the requested document. The only portion of this command line that you will want to modify is the "http://solar.ncsa.uiuc.edu/friends/home.html" portion.

Please note that your file can contain any number of requests - one request per line.

Our thanks to John Gerber for making this nice facility possible.
